This water tower at Friary Wood, near Limpley Stoke, Wiltshire, which has been here for many years now serves a second purpose as home to a new Cellnet base station installed in late 1996/ early 1997. The equipment hut is located at the base of the tower, within the water board enclosure. Three directional antennae are supported at the top, providing coverage in a beautiful rural area without the need for a mast.
This Cellnet base station does use a microwave/radio link to connect it to the network, this can be seen at the top centre of the tower. This site was, in its first month of operation, powered by a generator as the installation was completed before mains electricity was available for the base station.
